My approach

How I think about therapy, and what the work involves.

My philosophy

This being human is a guest house.

Rumi, The Guest House, translated by Coleman Barks

Each of us has an inner world shaped by our experiences, relationships, memories and desires. Much of it is familiar to us, while other parts remain difficult to understand or put into words. Sometimes we find ourselves repeating patterns we wish we could change, struggling in relationships that matter to us, or experiencing feelings that seem to arise without quite knowing why.

I believe that understanding ourselves begins with making room for these experiences: with curiosity rather than judgement, and with the possibility that there is more to our stories than we have yet discovered.

I don’t approach therapy assuming there is a single explanation for who you are, or a fixed version of yourself you need to become. I’m interested in the complexity of being human: our conflicting feelings, our uncertainties, our ways of loving and relating, and the parts of ourselves we find difficult to acknowledge.

Room Within is a space to become more familiar with yourself. Not so that every question is answered, but so that new understandings and new possibilities can emerge. The more room we have for our inner lives, the more freedom we may find in how we live, how we relate to others, and how we imagine our futures.

What is psychoanalytic psychotherapy?

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a form of talking therapy that seeks to understand not only the difficulties you are experiencing in the present, but also the patterns of thought, feeling and relationship that may lie beneath them. It is based on the understanding that much of our emotional life is shaped by experiences and processes that are not always fully conscious.

Rather than focusing only on relieving symptoms, it aims to develop a deeper understanding of yourself.

What sessions are like

The work unfolds through a relationship in which there is time to think, to feel, to question, and sometimes simply not to know. We talk freely about whatever comes to mind: thoughts, feelings, dreams, memories and relationships. Gradually we become interested in the patterns and contradictions that usually go unnoticed.

Over time, what once felt confusing may become more understandable, and what once seemed inevitable may begin to feel open to change.

The aim isn’t for me to tell you who you are, but for us to discover together things about you that you haven’t been able to see on your own.
